SAN BERNARDINO (Sept. 25, 2015) -- Cal State San Bernardino women's soccer team was golden once again in extra time.
The Coyotes got an overtime winner for the second straight game - this one from
Jessica Denton - and edged Cal State L.A., 1-0, Friday at Coyote Premier Field. Cal State San Bernardino (3-3-2, 2-0-1) has ended regulation even in its first three conference games and picked up the wins in consecutive games against UC San Diego and Cal State L.A.
While Cal State San Bernardino enjoyed the tight result, Cal State L.A. (0-5-2, 0-2-1) continued its string of hard-luck results. The Golden Eagles have lost four games by a 1-0 score and the other by a 2-1 count.
The Coyotes got the only goal of the game just 3:52 into the overtime period. Denton did the scoring honors, taking a pass from
Alex Yockey and arching a shot just inside the far post for her first goal of the season.
Both teams displayed tenacious defensive efforts and scoring chances were few and far between. Cal State L.A. had a 7-6 advantage in shots, including a 5-1 edge in the second half. The Golden Eagles also had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
Only three of the 13 shots in the game were on target. Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Adriana Maldonado made one save, while Cal State San Bernardino goalkeeper
Emily Whyte also made one save.
Cal State L.A. got its only shot on goal in the 83rd minute when Bianca Adame received a pass from Anahie Duran in the middle of the field, but Whyte was able to make the save.
Denae Verdine had a match-high three shots for the Coyotes, while
Ebony Squier,
Gabby Evaristo and Denton had one shot each.
Adame and Ashli Villalobos had two shots each for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State San Bernardino will return to action on Sunday with a home match under the lights against Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7 p.m.
