Box Score

SAN BERNARDINO (Jan. 31, 2015) -- What a difference a week makes.

One week after one of the most difficult stretches during coach Jeff Oliver's 13 seasons, the Coyotes seemingly turned the corner and finished the weekend with a home sweep, capping with a thrilling 78-77 come-from-behind victory over visiting Sonoma State before a crowd of 1,565 at Coussoulis Arena.

Junior Jacob Thomas led all five Coyotes starters in double figures with 25 points, 20 in the second half. Senior Taylor Statham added 16 on 6-of-7 shooting, with Everett Turner adding 11 and Tevin Harris and Isaiah Morton each with 10. CSUSB shot 59.8 percent from the floor, including a 65.2 percent clip in the second half.

The Coyotes accomplished a major achievement in their game against the Seawolves. Down 10 with 9:24 to go in the first half, the Coyotes succeeding in winning their first game of the season when trailing by at least 10 points.

Sonoma State grabbed a 21-10 lead with 9:24 to go in the half and that's when Oliver's crew stepped up with a 13-3 run in two minutes with Statham hitting a pair of 3s with a layup in that run.

The Coyotes trailed 33-32 at the half after hitting 13 of 24 FGs.

The second half featured three ties and five lead changes.

CSUSB, which trailed by nine with 14:51 left, battled back and later established a 21-5 run. Thomas hit two 3s and a pair of free throws and Harris secured his own 6-0 run, capped by a dunk that put the Coyotes up by nine, 70-61 with 3:26 left.

The Coyotes remained in front and when Turner hit a 3 with 1:32 left, they led 74-68 with 1:32 left. SSU's James Davis answered with a 3 of his own.

On the next possession, Thomas hit a pair of free throws for a five-point Coyotes' lead, but SSU wouldn't go away.

Mike Harris got the ball in the deep left wing and drained a 3-pointer. Statham was called on the foul and Harris converted on a four-point play with the Coyotes clinging to a 76-75 lead with 41 seconds left.

Thomas and the Coyotes held the ball, until he drove inside for a layup with 11 seconds left and the Coyotes up 78-75.

Turner then fouled SSU's Jabri Jenkins, who hit two free throws, but the Coyotes inbounded the ball with 5.1 seconds left.

However, instead of passing the ball close, the Coyotes tried a baseball pass to midcourt that was stolen, leaving SSU with one last chance. Davis's 3-pointer before the buzzer hit was off and the Coyotes' comeback was completed.

CSUSB (8-9, 8-6 CCAA) was extremely adept on assist to field goals as it dealt 23 assists on 28 field goals. Morton led with eight and Thomas seven. Turner had four.

Davis led the Seawolves (9-9, 6-8) with a game-high 27 points. JJ Mina had 19 on 7-of-8 shots.

The Coyotes return to the road Friday (Cal State Dominguez Hills) and Saturday (Cal State L.A.).
