Box Score TURLOCK (Jan. 9, 2015) -- Jacob Thomas and Taylor Statham combined for 30 points in the Coyotes' 64-60 loss to Cal State Stanislaus in CCAA men's basketball Friday night.
Thomas scored 16 points -- nine in the final five minutes -- and Statham added 14 for CSUSB, now 4-6 overall and 4-3 in the CCAA.
Cal State Stanislaus shot 54.3 percent from the floor and had three players in double figures. Rob Walters was huge, hitting 20 points with 14 rebounds, four assists and three steals. Chris Read had 14 and Wes Bartole 10 for the Warriors, 8-4, 5-2.
The Coyotes nearly came back after trailing 51-45 with 8:22 left. Thomas hit two free throws and Statham added a jumper to cut the deficit to two in less than a minute.
A 3-pointer by Thomas was answered immediately by one from CSUS's Christian Bayne and Casey Oldemoppen's layup tied the game at 54-54 with 5:52 left.
Each team traded the lead on its next possessions -- a Walters free throw and a Thomas 3-pointer -- before a dunk from Bartole tied the game at 57-57 with 4:42 left.
Walters then hit two jumpers and a layup from Read put CSUS up 63-57 with 1:43 left.
On the Coyotes' next possession, Thomas drained his third 3-pointer down the stretch to pull the Coyotes to within three with 1:21 left.
The Coyotes had two chances to tie the game after Read came up short on a jumper. Thomas' 3 was off with 18 seconds left and Coyotes center Tevin Harris gathered the offensive rebound. After the Coyotes called time out, Thomas fired off another 3 with 5 seconds left, but the shot didn't go down.
Read hit the first of two free throws for the four-point difference.
