SAN BERNARDINO -- The ultimate moment for a pinch-hitter must be a swing of the bat that could change a game's outcome.
That scenario met senior Richard Mount square in the face during Sunday's game against visiting Cal State East Bay.
Mount came through with a pinch-hit grand slam that capped a six-run rally in the eighth inning for the Coyotes, who went on to win 9-5 over the Pioneers in their series finale at Fiscalini Field.
CSUSB (2-7 overall, 2-2 CCAA) returns to CCAA play Thursday afternoon at Cal State Dominguez Hills.
CSUSB grabbed early momentum when Nick Oddo clubbed a three-run home run off the right-field scoreboard for a 3-1 lead.
But over the next six innings, the Coyotes were held scoreless with only two hits, while the Pioneers (5-3, 2-2) grabbed the lead and led 5-3 entering the Coyotes' eighth.
CSUSB's Jose Hernandez reached base on a one-out single to right and moved to second when Kevin Meriwether was hit by a pitch.
Nolan Almodovar followed when he laid down a bunt that CSUEB pitcher Michael Pope could not handle and the bases were loaded.
Senior Trevor McMaster then laced a two-run double to the right-center gap and the score was tied at 5-5.
Oddo then walked to load the bases and after Remington Miller's ground ball forced Almodovar out at the plate, Mount stepped into the box.
He worked the count to 1-2 and then delivered a Julian Garcia offering over the left-center field wall for the 9-5 lead.
The Coyotes' Brian Jipp came on in the ninth and got a pair of strikeouts in a 1-2-3 inning.
Matt LeVert (1-0) earned the victory in just one third of an inning.
Freshman LHP Jake Meloche threw seven innings. He had one strikeout and gave up eight hits, four runs (two earned).
Pope took the loss and had five strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings.
