HAYWARD -- Coyotes coach Jeff Oliver will take his chances when his team hits at least half of its shots.

The No. 17 Coyotes reached the 50 percent level for the 11th time this season -- all victories -- in an 80-73 win over host Cal State East Bay in CCAA basketball Saturday.

Senior Andrew Young scored a season-best 27 points and fellow senior Lacy Haddock followed with 17 in a game that saw CSUSB pull away late from a pesky Pioneers team that lost for the 10th time in its last 11 games.

The Coyotes also kept their streak of fine play on Friday night alive with their seventh victory in as many games.

But the story on this occasion centered on the Coyotes ability to pull away late and win.

Trailing 62-58 with 6:09 remaining in the game, Haddock gave the Coyotes a jump start on a successful 3-point play and Juan Martinez followed with a 3-pointer of his own and CSUSB led 64-62 with 5:37 left.

Over the next five-plus minutes, the Coyotes held the Pioneers without a field goal and capped a 20-8 run when Taylor Statham hit a pair of free throws for a 78-70 lead with 13 seconds left.

Young hit 10-of-21 from the floor and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Meanwhile, Haddock dished out six assists and finished 5-of-7 FGs and 7-of-8 from the line.

CSUSB finished 26-of-52 from the floor with the majority of its fire power from inside the 3-point arc. It hit just four 3-pointers, but scored 24 free throws in the seven-point win.

The Coyotes (18-3 overall and 15-2 CCAA) close the trip Saturday night at Cal State Monterey Bay. Tipoff is 7 p.m.

Jacari Whitfield led the Pioneers (7-16, 4-13) with 15 points.

Coyotes senior guard Kirby Gardner was ejected from the game with 4:47 remaining in the first half, along with CSUEB's Gabe Kindred. Gardner will not play in Saturday's game.
