Coyotes secure season sweep over Humboldt State

Box Score

SAN BERNARDINO (Nov. 29, 2014) -- CSUSB utilized a well-balanced offense that relied upon transition baskets in its 82-71 victory over visiting Humboldt State in CCAA men's basketball Saturday night at Coussoulis Arena.

Sophomore Everett Turner and senior Casey Oldemoppen each scored 17 points to key CSUSB, now 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the CCAA. All five Coyotes starters scored in double figures with guard Isaiah Morton hitting 14, and Gilbert Parga and Taylor Statham each with 10.

CSUSB hit 69 percent from the floor in the opening half and finished the evening 61.1 percent on 33 of 54 shooting. The Coyotes outscored HSU on points off turnovers at 26-10, based upon HSU's 18 miscues.

The Coyotes led for nearly the entire game and led by as many as 14 points in both halves. But it would be incorrect to think this was a game that was well-in-hand. HSU got as close as four points and closed the gap to 74-70 CSUSB on a pair of David Howard free throws with 1:56 left.

Oldemoppen answered on the Coyotes' next possession. An errant 3-pointer by Everett Turner was gathered by Oldemoppen, who put the shot up for the basket.

HSU closed to five on a Brett McConnell free throw, but Statham answered with two of his own and CSUSB led 78-71 with 26 seconds left.

CSUSB surged to a 10-point lead in the first half thanks to field goals from Statham, Shawn Joseph and Oldemoppen for a 29-19 advantage with 9:39 left. Turner later gave CSUSB its largest lead of the opening 20 minutes on a jumper with 5:47 left for a 37-23 lead.

The Coyotes led throughout the second half and were cruising at 57-43 on Parga's layup with 11:40 left.

But HSU went on a 12-2 run over the next three minutes to cut the deficit to four, but CSUSB answered HSU's run with one of its own with eight straight points to go up 69-57 on a Turner layup with 5:04 left.

Morton made sure the Coyotes kept their streak of consecutive games with a 3-pointer when he drained the outside shot from the top of the key that padded the lead 72-63 with 3:35 left. CSUSB has not been shut out from the 3-point line since Nov. 25, 2000, against Winona State -- a streak that has now reached 404 games.

HSU (3-2, 0-2) was led by Allan Guei and Malik Morgan with 13 each.
