SAN BERNARDINO --
Curtis Cassise just missed hitting for the cycle in the Coyotes' opener against Cal State Stanislaus and
Andrew Harrison continued his hot-hitting as CSUSB swept Cal State Stanislaus 13-4 and 3-2 in their CCAA doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.
The Coyotes (19-28 overall, 13-26 CCAA) and Warriors (10-39, 5-34) conclude the regular season at 11 a.m. Sunday on Senior Day.
Game 1: Coyotes 13, Cal State Stanislaus 4
Cassise paced the Coyotes with a 5-for-6 effort at the plate and needed only a triple to post his first cycle performance.
Cassise had two singles, two doubles and a two-run home run and added four RBI as the Coyotes out-hit the Warriors 18-10 and scored in every inning except the fourth.
The Coyotes took control in the second inning, sending 10 batters to the plate.
Jake Pilkerton had a two-run single and designated hitter
Billy Hamilton answered with a two-run double to key the output.
The only question in this game as if Cassise would have an opportunity for the cycle. Needing a triple in his last at-bat, he ripped a shot to left center in the eighth that scored Pilkerton giving the Coyotes their 13-4 lead. Cassise was in full gear rounding second, but put on the brakes about five steps past the base and returned safely ahead of the throw.
Kerry Kelley improved to 4-2 with eight innings of work. He scattered nine hits, with five strikeouts and six walks. However, only one of the four runs allowed was earned.
Hamilton went 3-for-6 with three RBI and Pilkerton was 2-for-5 with two RBI. Harrison,
Remington Miller and
Colton Johnson each had two hits.
Game 2: Coyotes 3, Cal State Stanislaus 2
Harrison led the Coyotes with three hits in as many at-bats and Miller had two RBI as the Coyotes extended their winning streak to three games, their best stretch of success since opening the year 5-0.
In the third, Cassise led off with a double and came around to score on Harrison's one-out single up the middle. Two batters later, Miller rippled a double to left center that scored Harrison all the way from first.
The Warriors tied the game at 2-2 with runs in the fourth and fifth off Coyotes' starter
Taylor Valentine, but the Coytoes regained the lead for good in their half of the fifth.
After
Aaron Beckley flew out to center to lead off the inning, Harrison placed a well-executed bunt to third as the Warriors were playing the senior first baseman to pull to the right side of the field.
Harrison moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on Hamilton's ground out. That brought Miller to the plate, and he promptly hit a single up the middle to score Harrison.
Valentine threw five inning and gave up four hits, struck out three and walked four.
Chris Neff held the lead in the sixth and
Matt LeVert earned his fifth save of the season with two strikeouts in the seventh.
Miller and Cassise each had two hits.
For the series, Harrison is 7-for-8 (.857) and Cassise is 10-for-15 with three doubles and a home run.
