SAN BERNARDINO --
Jake Pilkerton came through Friday afternoon, sending a sinking liner to left that brought in the winning run in the Coyotes' 9-8 win over visiting Cal State Stanislaus in CCAA baseball at Fiscalini Field.
The Coyotes snapped their two-game losing streak and improved to 17-28 overall and 11-26 in the CCAA. CSUSB returns to Fiscalini on Saturday with a doubleheader that begins at 11 a.m. against the Warriors (10-37, 5-32).
Cal State Stanislaus entered the game with just three home runs on the season. But on Friday, CSUS scored all eight of its runs on four home runs -- a solo shot by Justin Charles, two home runs by Craig Beevers and a two-run shot by Skippy Ferreira.
But the Coyotes out-hit the Warriors, 17-10 and came through with clutch hitting for the victory.
Down 1-0 after Charles led off the game with a homer to left off Coyotes' starter RHP
Ken Kissell, CSUSB came back in the second to tie the game on
Steven Chagolla's double to left center that scored freshman
Tyler Staab.
After Beevers connected on a three-run home in the fifth, CSUSB rallied in its half the fifth on five runs off seven consecutive hits.
Pilkerton and
Curtis Cassise each hit singles through the left side and that brought up
Aaron Beckley, who ripped a towering blow to right center for a three-run home run.
Not to be outdone,
Remington Miller followed with a solo home run to arguably the deepest part of the ballpark -- the left center gap and CSUSB led 5-4. Two batters later, Staab connected on a two-out single that scored
Trevor McMaster, who singled, and the Coyotes led 6-4.
In the seventh, pinch-hitter
Andrew Harrison came through with a two-run double and the Coyotes had a four-run cushion, 8-4.
But in the seventh, Beevers earned his second successive home run, this time off Coyotes' reliever
Brian Jipp and the Coyotes saw their lead cut in half.
But after the home run, Jipp settled down. He got out of the seventh with two straight strikeouts, then got his third in a row to lead off the eighth.
The Warriors greeted Coyotes closer
Matt LeVert rudely in the ninth. After Levert got pinch-hitter Andy Yingling out to lead off the ninth, Charles followed with a double to left and Ferreria connected on a game-tying home run to left.
The Coyotes began the ninth with pinch-hitter
Billy Hamilton leading off the ninth with a single to center.
CSUS got Staab to ground out to first and then intentionally walked Chagolla and
Christian Gomez to load the bases with one out to Pilkerton.
The Lake Arrowhead senior turned on a 1-1 delivery from Anthony Ocampo to left and pinch-runner
Josh Herrera easily scored from third.
Cassise led the Coyotes with three hits and Pilkerton, Beckley, Miller and
Michael Castello all had two hits.
Kissell threw six innings and had six strikeouts -- all in his final three innings.
