CSUSB runs into tough pitching

Jake Pilkerton had two hits including a double against the Toros.
Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – Cal State San Bernardino faced a difficult test against Cal State Dominguez Hills' Dimitri De La Fuente in a 2-0 Coyotes' loss in CCAA baseball Friday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.

The Coyotes (9-5 overall and 3-3 CCAA) and Toros (7-8, 4-6) will complete their four-game series with a doubleheader at Carson on Saturday.

First pitch is at 11 a.m.

De La Fuente (2-0) earned the shutout and threw just 107 pitches for the victory. He struck out eight, walked one and allowed only six hits.

Coyotes RHP Ken Kissell (1-2) was equally strong as he matched his counterpart. He threw seven innings and gave up his only run in the seventh.

CSUDH broke the scoreless tie on Kevin Logan's one-out single through the left side. Danny Haley led off the inning with a double to left, then moved over on a sacrifice bunt.

One pitch after Logan failed to execute on a squeeze play, he delivered a 1-2 offering from Kissell for the first run.

The Toros added an insurance run in the ninth off RHP reliever Chris Neff. With Logan on second and going on the pitch, Ivory Thomas lifted a hard hit ball to the left of shortstop Jake Pilkerton.

The Coyotes got the force out, but Logan never stopped running from second and just beat the throw from first baseman Trevor McMaster.

Logan led the Toros with three hits and Haley had two.

The Coyotes threatened in the seventh when they had runners at second and third with one out. Billy Hamilton singled and after Steven Chagolla came on to pinch run, Jake Pilkerton doubled down the left-field line.

The inning ended when Michael Castello struck out and David Silvas grounded to second.

Pilkerton and Curtis  Cassise each had two hits, with Pilkerton earning the only extra-base hit.
