SAN BERNARDINO -- The outside game from
Brian Goins and the inside play of
Kwame Alexander helped deliver the goods Saturday night in a 93-68 rout over visiting Humboldt State in CCAA men's basketball.
Goins fired a game-high 28, one shy of his season best, and Alexander was right behind with 23 as the Coyotes snapped their three-game home losing streak in style with a game that was well-in-hand the final 30 minutes of play before a crowd of 1,220 at Coussoulis Arena.
The prolific duo became the first Coyotes to each surpass 20 points in a game this year as CSUSB hit 52.2 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Lumberjacks, 49-40.
Goins was unstoppable in the first half, hitting all seven of his field goals for 17 first-half points. Alexander then stepped up in the second half with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting and completed the game with three dunks.
The victory puts CSUSB at 15-4 overall and 13-3 in the CCAA and secures a CCAA Tourney berth, while HSU dropped to 9-11, 5-11.
Consecutive jumpers from
Johnny Bell helped trigger a 10-2 run at the midway point of the first half that helped the Coyotes go up 23-13 with 9:18 left.
And once the second half began, it was all Coyotes. After HSU's Cody Kale brought the Lumberjacks to within eight points (49-41), CSUSB enjoyed a 16-0 run keyed by Goins' seven points, a Bell 3-pointer and an Alexander dunk and it led 65-41 with 11:59 left.
The Coyotes led by as many as 31 down the stretch.
Eleven of the 12 Coyotes' dressed scored. Senior
Pablo Genevo had nine points with a game-high 13 boards, while Bell added 13 wtih seven rebounds and three steals.
Joshua Gouch had three points, with five rebounds, four assists and three steals in 28 minutes off the bench.
Brett McDonnell led the Lumberjacks with 14 points.
The Coyotes return to the road for the final time in CCAA play this week when they play at Chico State (Friday) and Cal State Stanislaus (Saturday). Both opponents defeated the Coyotes in January in Coussoulis Arena.
