SAN BERNARDINO – The Coyotes' basketball team is in a tough position entering the final week of regular-season play.

Cal State San Bernardino was dealt its fourth loss in its last six games as the Coyotes found themselves trailing Cal State East Bay late in the first half and never caught up in an 82-72 defeat to the Pioneers before a crowd of 1,247 at Coussoulis Arena.

Senior Kwame Alexander scored a game-high 21 points including a 9-of-10 effort from the free throw line, but the Coyotes could not stop CSUEB from hitting its shots. The Pioneers, who led 38-32 at the half, then hit 57.7 percent from the field in the second half for their first-ever win in San Bernardino in six games.

Junior guard Lacy Haddock was next in line for the Coyotes with 18 points, and Joshua Gouch stood out with 14 points, six rebounds and four blocks, but no other Coyote scored more than six.

CSUSB's season-leading scorer Brian Goins had four points including a 1-for-6 effort from the field in 26 minutes.

CSUEB's Jason Smith led his team with 18 points on six 3-pointers. Ryan Hebebrand followed with 14 as five Pioneers scored in double figures.

CSUSB, now 16-7 overall and 14-6 CCAA and ranked sixth in the NCAA West Region poll, closes the regular season at home next week with games against San Francisco State (Thursday) and Sonoma State (Friday).
