Box Score POMONA -- It took 12 innings, two locations and a span of more than 21 hours, but Cal State San Bernardino prevailed in its second game of a CCAA baseball series against Cal Poly Pomona with a 6-5 win Saturday morning.
The game was a continuation of Friday's play that was called after 10 innings due to darkness at Fiscalini Field. The score was tied at 5-5 and the game's completion was set for Saturday at CPP's Scolinos Field.
The Coyotes (6-1 overall and 1-1 CCAA) earned the victory in the 12th. Freshman
Christian Gomez reached base on a one-out bunt single and junior lead-off hitter
Aaron Beckley followed with a single.
With runners at first and second, senior
Curtis Cassise made the sure the game ended in the Coyotes' favor with a single to right for the game-winning RBI.
The over-riding factor was the Coyotes pitching staff that kept the Broncos at bay. The combination of starter
Ken Kissell,
Phil Gonzalez,
Matt LeVert and
Kerry Kelley.
Kisell allowed five runs over the first three innings, but settled down afterward. He threw the first of three shut-out innings and relievers Gonzalez, LeVert and Kelley combined to shut out CPP over the final six frames.
Kissell finished six innings and scattered eight hits, gave up five runs (three earned) and had eight strikeouts with just one walk.
Gonzales allowed one hit in three innings, LeVert gave up a hit in his one inning and Kelley (1-0), who earned the victory, gave up just two hits with one strikeout in his two innings.
Down 3-0 after CPP's initial at-bats, CSUSB came back and scored all five of its runs in the second inning.
David Silvas brought in the first run on a fielder's choice that scored
Jake Pilkerton, who led off with a single.Two batters later, a bases-loaded walk to Cassise got the Coyotes brought the Coyotes to within a run and
Remington Miller followed with a two-run single through the right side to give the Coyotes a 4-3 lead.
Trevor McMaster accounted for the inning's final run on a fielder's choice RBI.
But CPP came back with a two-run third and the score remained 5-5 until Saturday morning.
Gomez led the Coyotes at the plate with four hits -- all singles. Beckley, Cassise and Miller each had two hits.
