Box Score LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Cal State San Bernardino opened the regular men's basketball season with three starters sitting out due to injuries but proved competitive in dropping a 78-74 decision to Washburn University of Kansas at the Doolittle Center Saturday afternoon.

The Coyote (0-1) managed to make it close despite hitting on just four of 24 shots from beyond the three-point line.

"It was back and forth all afternoon but they made the points down the stretch and we didn't," head coach Jeff Oliver said. "If we had shot better from the perimeter we would have been victorious.''

The Coyotes led at the half 37-34 but were outscored 44-37 in the final 20 minutes. Kyle Wiggins led the Ichabods with 19 points. He was among four players in double figures for Washburn, a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

CSUSB, representing the California Collegiate Athletic Association, were led by senior guard Lacy Haddock with 15 points, including two 3-pointers. Senior guard Kirby Gardner had 12 points, hitting on six of 10 field goal attempts. Senior forward Joshua Gouch had nine points and eight rebounds. Junior Tevin Harris had seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Freshman Khleem Perkins chipped in nine points, hitting four of nine field goal attempts including one from beyond the arc. Larry Thompkins also had nine points for CSUSB. Casey Oldemoppen came off the bench to score seven points.

The Coyotes shot 37 percent from the field (24 of 65) but just 16 percent from long range (4 of 24). The team made 22 of 33 free throws (66 percent). CSUSB had 15 turnovers with nine assists. Washburn had 16 turnovers and six assists in the contest.

Donte Medder, who had 10 points against UCLA in the Oct. 30 exhibition game, Andrew Young, a 6-8 center, and Jordan Burris did not play.

The Coyotes will host Westmont College of Santa Barbara on Wednesday night in their home opener of the 2013-14 season.
