ARCATA -- Humboldt State hit six straight free throws inside the final minute of play and turned back the visiting Coyotes 72-66 in the CCAA regular-season finale Friday night.
The Coyotes (14-11 overall, 13-9 CCAA) have earned the fifth seed in next week's CCAA Tournament and will play at fourth-seed Sonoma State (16-10, 14-8) on Tuesday night. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.
It will mark the fifth straight game away from Coussoulis Arena.
Trailing 57-49 with 8:58 remaining, the Coyotes responded with a 13-0 run in four-plus minutes and led 62-57 on
Vaughn Adams' 3-pointer with 4:54 left.
The Coyotes remained out front on a layup from
Scooter Holmes that put the score 64-60 with 4:05 left.
That's when HSU's Brandon Sperling answered with a layup and after a missed jumper from
Juan Martinez, HSU's Scott Clark scored a 3-poiner and the Lumberjacks led 65-64 with 3:31 left
Martinez came back to hit a layup, and HSU's Randy Hunter answered with a free throw to tie the game at 66-66 with 3 minutes.
But down the stretch, the Lumberjacks hit six consecutive free throws and CSUSB missed five field goals over the final 2:37.
Tre' Brewer led the Coyotes with 19 points and
Kwame Alexander had 13. Holmes had 12 and
Theron Laudermill 10.
Clark led the Lumberjacks (19-7, 15-7) with 19.
