SEASIDE -- Facing a team that had lost 18 consecutive games turned out to be a tough task for the Coyotes' men's basketball team Saturday night.
The Coyotes were dealt a 72-66 overtime loss to Cal State Monterey Bay in CCAA play and will face an even more daunting task if they have any hope of hosting a first-round CCAA Tourney game.
CSUSB, now 13-10 overall and 12-8 CCAA, hit just 14 field goals -- their poorest output since Feb. 28, 2004, when the Coyotes had 14 FGs against UC Davis.
What kept the Coyotes in the game against the Otters (3-21, 2-18) was at the free-throw line. CSUSB scored 32 free throws -- their most in five seasons.
Senior
Theron Laudermill led the Coyotes with 22 points and hit 14-of-16 from the line. Junior
Kwame Alexander had his fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and 13 rebounds and senior
Tre' Brewer had 13 points.
A three-pointer from the Otters' Brandon Ward with 12 seconds left tied the game at 58-58. Ward finished with a game-high 23 points as CSUMB hit 8-of-9 from the line in OT.
CSUSB will remain on the road this week and plays at Sonoma State (15-9, 13-7) on Wednesday night. The Coyotes are one game behind both SSU and Friday night's opponent, Humboldt State (17-7, 13-7), in the race for a top-four finish and hosting rights Feb. 28
