HAYWARD -- Senior
Theron Laudermill scored a career-high 25 points with 10 rebounds for his eight double-double of the season, but the Coyotes dropped to fifth place in the CCAA race with a disappointing 74-72 loss to Cal State East Bay in men's basketball.
CSUSB, now 13-9, 12-7 in the CCAA, will take on Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday. The Otters (2-21) have lost 18 consecutive and haven't won since Dec. 3, 2011.
CSUEB's outside shooting was the difference in this one as the Pioneers outscored the Coyotes 36-15 from the 3-point stripe in earning their first win over the Coyotes since Dec. 10, 1993.
Mark Samuels and Jason Smith each had 18 points for the Pioneers, now 9-14, 7-12. It marked the third time in the Coyotes' last eight games that their opponent scored 10 or more 3-pointers.
The Coyotes led 67-64 with 5:27 left on
Nate Roth's only 3-pointer of the game. But that was the last field goal for CSUSB until
Hakeem Washington's jumper that tied the game at 71-71 with 1:07 remaining.
Quinton Lilley broke the game's eighth tie with a jumper with 29 seconds left. The Coyotes had a chance to tie the game, but Washington's could not convert the second shot of a two-shot foul with 18 seconds and the Coyotes down, 73-72.
Samuels went back to the line and hit the front end. The Coyotes had the ball in the final 14 seconds. Roth fired a 3-pointer that was off and Laudermill's putback was short.
It marked just the second time in 14 games that the Coyotes lost when leading with five minutes left.
Roth had 12 points and senior
Tre' Brewer 11. The Coyotes were just 5-of-24 from the 3-point stripe.
