SAN BERNARDINO -- The Coyotes raced to a three-run first inning without a base hit and went on to defeat visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills 6-3 in a nonconference meeting Saturday afternoon at Fiscalini Field.
Curtis Cassise had two hits and scored three runs and
Edwin Mendoza had two RBI as the Coyotes improved their record to 3-2 on the season.
The Coyotes and Toros were scheduled to play a seven-inning game, but the game was stopped due to rain with the Coyotes leading 9-2 in the bottom of the third inning. It was not known at 11:01 p.m. Saturday night when the teams would complete the game.
The Coyotes plated three runs with no hits and two errors in the first. They had three runners reach base by walk and led 3-1.
After the Toros got a run in the fourth, the Coyotes scored two runs on two hits in the fifth. Cassise had the first hit of the day for the Coyotes with a single to right. Four batters later,
Matt Winn laced a two-run double to right center that scored Cassise and Mendoza, who reached on a hit by pitch.
In the seventh, Cassise led off with a double and later scored on Mendoza's double down the right-field line.
Senior LHP
Cory Caruso earned the win for his first decision of the season. He threw 7 1/3 innings, scattered eight hits, gave up three runs -- all earned -- and struck out four. Junior RHP
Tony Guerra earned the save with two outs in the ninth.
Jeff Terzo threw one inning of no-hit relief.
