Coyotes suffer 97-90 loss in season opener at Westmont

-- Junior Brian Goins scored a game-high 29 points, but the Coyotes could not stop a hot-shooting Westmont squad and were handed a 97-90 loss in the men's basketball season opener.
 
Westmont shot 57.1 percent from the floor on 36of 63shooting as the Warriors pulled away late.
 
Junior Lacy Haddock's two free throws pulled the Coyotes to within a point -- 89-88 -- with 1:14 left.
 
On Westmont's next possession, Niko Brooks buried a three-pointer to go up by four with 40 seconds and the Coyotes could not close the gap down the stretch.
 
Goins shot 10 of 20 from the floor including three 3-pointers. Senior Johnny Bell followed with 12 points and Haddock added 11.
 
CSUSB played well on the offensive end, hitting 32 of 63shots (50.8 percent) and scored 12 3-pointers. The Coyotes also hit 14 of 18 at the line.
 
Westmont outrebounded the Coyotes 39-28.
 
CSUSB returns to the court on Saturday, Nov. 24 when it opens the CCAA season at home against UC San Diego.
 
Brooks led the Warriors (3-0) with 22 points and Preston Branson followed with 20.
