POMONA – Poor shooting and a lack of rebounding spelled a long night for the Coyotes in their 67-54 loss at Cal Poly Pomona on Saturday in CCAA men's basketball.
The Coyotes, who lost for the third time in their last four games, dropped to 10-7 overall and 9-5 in the CCAA. CPP is 13-4, 10-4.
The Coyotes shot a season-worst 15 percent 3-pointers (3-of-20) and had only 24 rebounds – six below their previous low. CCAA leading rebounders
Theron Laudermill (0) and
Kwame Alexander (6) were almost 10 below their combined average of 15.9 rebounds per game.
It marked the second time CPP did not allow a Laudermill rebound in the season series.
Senior
Tre' Brewer led CSUSB with 16 points, his 11
th straight double-figure scoring effort and 14 of his last 17 games. No other Coyote scored in double figures. Alexander had eight on 4-of-5 shots.
Down nine early in the second half, CSUSB tied the game at 37-apiece with 13:48 left, thanks to five points from Brewer and three from reserve
Scooter Holmes.
The game was tied two more times until a layup and free throw from junior
Hakeem Washington put the Coyotes out front 44-41 with 10:26 left.
CPP came right back with nine straight points. Brewer stopped the streak with a jumper and Laudermill hit two free throws to pull the Coyotes to within a basket at 50-48 with 5:23 left.
But Mitchel Anderson responded with a 3-pointer and after Brewer missed on a 3-pointer, DeRonn Scott added a jumper and the Broncos led 55-48 with 4:05 left and pulled away with a lead as large as 15.
Anderson led CPP with 17 and Scott had 14 as CPP shot a season-best field goal percentage against the Coyotes at 55.6 percent on 25-of-45 shots.
