SAN BERNARDINO
-- When a team hits 56 percent of its field goals and out-rebounds the opponent, one would figure the victory would go hand-in-hand.

That did not happen Saturday for Cal State San Bernardino. And the reason came down to Sonoma State's Will Olsen.

The junior guard scored 38 points with 12 3-pointers as visiting Sonoma State defeated the Coyotes 86-71 before a crowd of 950 at Coussoulis Arena.

The victory dropped the Coyotes into a five-way tie for first place at 8-4 in the CCAA. Sonoma State sits two games back at 6-6.

SSU finished with 15 3-pointers to establish a record for an opponent against CSUSB. It was 15 of 30 from the beyond the arc and 29 of 57 (50.9 percent) from the floor for its largest margin of victory in the 37-game series.

This was a tough loss for the Coyotes in a game that featured five ties and five scoring changes. They out-shot the Seawolves and held a 32-27 advantage on the boards. But turnovers played a big determining factor as CSUSB finished with 22.

The Coyotes were led by junior Kwame Alexander, who led with 22 points and threw down five monster dunks. He was 10 of 14 from the floor and also grabbed 13 rebounds for his fourth double-double this season. His 10 field goals are the most by a Coyote since former All-American Bryan LeDuc's 10 against Vanguard during the 2009-10 season.

The turning point arrived right after Alexander's fourth dunk of the night. That cut SSU's lead to 60-58 with 10:09 left. After a pair of errant 3-pointers by the Seawolves, Olsem returned to the game and drilled back-to-back 3-pointers for a 66-58 SSU lead.

The Coyotes fought back with a pair of 3s from Tre' Brewer and another dunk from Alexander that cut the deficit to two again, 68-66, with 6:29 left.

But another 3 -- this one from Brian Crow -- put SSU up 71-66 and they ended the game on an 18-5 run.

Brewer had 11 points and Hakeem Washington and Johnny Bell each had 10.

GAME NOTES... The  consecutive home losses this weekend were the first in the Jeff Oliver-era. The last time CSUSB lost consecutive home games was January 1998 -- Larry Reynolds' first season as head coach... Olsem's 12 3-pointers was one shy of the CCAA record, held by UCSD's Robby Peters against CSU Monterey Bay on March 2, 2007.
