Late rally falls short in 65-61 loss to Humboldt State

Twenty-seven turnovers prove costly

-- Visiting Humboldt State utilized a 24-2 run in second half and despite a furious late flurry, the Coyotes lost a 65-61 decision against the Lumberjacks in CCAA men's basketball Friday night.

Senior Tre' Brewer scored a game-high 18 points and senior Theron Laudermill added 11 with 12 rebounds as the Coyotes dropped to 9-5 overall and 8-3 in the CCAA. The Lumberjacks won their fourth straight and improved to 11-4, 7-4.

The Coyotes remain in first place in the CCAA by one game, but five teams are tied for second at 7-4.

A look at the box score would make one's head shake. CSUSB turned the ball over a season-high 27 times and HSU outscored the Coyotes 28-14 off turnovers. But, CSUSB held an overwhelming edge on the glass, outrebounding HSU 56-35 and had 26 offensive rebounds.

Tied at 27-27 at halftime, the Coyotes came out early and played solidly. Junior Johnny Bell hit six straight points -- two free throws and a pair of baskets -- and CSUSB led 33-27 with 18:07 left.

After Brandon Sperling's three-point play, Theron Laudermill and D.J. Shumpert each had baskets inside and CSUSB led 38-30 with 15:16 left.

That set-up HSU's scoring run. Reserve Austin Bryan scored 13 of his 16 points in that stretch and reserve Matt Lipski's layup put the Jacks ahead 54-40 with 4:30 left.

After Scott Clark's free throws put HSU ahead 62-54 with 53 seconds left, the Coyotes did not quit. Junior Hakeem Washington scored a layup, then forced a turnover on the inbounds play. He was fouled and hit the front end of a bonus.

On the miss, Shumpert grabbed the rebound and hit a jumper to pull CSUSB to within three, 62-59 with 38 seconds left.

After two free throws from D.J. Broome on separate trips down the court, Washington hit another layup and CSUSB trailed again by three, 64-61 with 22 seconds left.

Bell then fouled Brandon Sparling, who who just the second shot of a bonus and the Lumberjacks led 65-61 with 14 seconds left. The Coyotes missed two 3-pointers to end the game.

Bryan's 16 led HSU and Clark and Sperling each had 13.

Three Coyotes had double-digit rebound games: Laudermill 12, Alexander 11 and Shumpert 11.

GAME NOTES: The last time CSUSB outrebounded a team by at least 20 and lost was the 2004 NCAA West Regional semifinals against Alaska-Fairbanks... The 27 turnovers is the most given up by the Coyotes since allowing 27 to Cal State Dominguez Hills in 2007-08...
