ARCATA -- Cal State San Bernardino could not match host Humboldt State's hot shooting as the Lumberjacks fired 57.4 percent from the floor and defeated the Coyotes 91-72 in CCAA men's play Thursday night.
The Coyotes, who are now 5-4 overall and 3-2 in the CCAA, were led by seniors
Robbie Robinson and
Corey Caston, who each scored 13 points. Senior guard
Aaron Hill added 10 as the Coyotes had difficulty stopping the Jacks' offense.
Four players scored in double figures for HSU (10-1, 6-1) as senior Brian Morris (21 points, 11 rebounds) and guard Brandon Sperling (17 points, 10 assists) each had a double-double. It marked the third time this season that HSU fired at least 57 percent from the floor.
HSU led at halftime 35-25 and were nearly unstoppable on offense in the final 20 minutes. They were 17 of 24 from the floor (70.8 percent) and hit 17 of 19 free throws (89.5 percent) in the second half.
CSUSB returns to the court Saturday night when it faces Sonoma State. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m.
GAME NOTES: The 19-point margin of victory is the largest for HSU in the series history. The previous best was an 11-point win (89-78) on Feb. 3, 2007, in Arcata... Morris, Hunter and Sperling have combined to score in double figures in nine of the Jacks' 11 games. Morris has scored in double figures in 11 straight games, while Hunter and Sperling have in 10 of the 11... HSU's 91 points marks the first time the Coyotes have allowed 90 or more points in a game since Dec. 28, 2005 -- Grand Canyon's 98-97 victory in Phoenix.
