CARSON
-- Cal State Dominguez Hills is no pushover this year as No.2-ranked Cal State San Bernardino found out Saturday night before sweeping past the Toros 3-0 in a CCAA conference women's volleyball match.

The host Toros battled hard and forced the Coyotes into extra play in the second set before falling 27-25. CSUSB took the other two sets 25-17, 25-17, to improve to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in the CCAA. The Toros, who upended Cal Poly Pomona on Friday night, fell to 1-8 overall and 1-3 in the CCAA.

The victory gives the Coyotes sole possession of first place in the CCAA, one game ahead of Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State L.A., both 3-1.

Playing without all-America outside hitter Jane Chafeh, the Coyotes relied on a deep bench and veteran returners led by junior outside hitter Morgan Carty who had a team-high 10 kills on .333 hitting and had seven digs in the victory.

Senior outside hitter Nicole Moore appeared in her first match of the season after recovering from illness and put down seven kills. Sophomore Camille Smith and junior Krista Hasemeyer combined for 31 assists with Hasemeyer finishing with 16, eight digs and four kills.

Junior libero Kelcie Tolan had 10 digs in the match.

The Coyotes hit just .202 for the match and made an uncharacteristic 21 attack errors, compared to just five in the 3-0 win over Cal State L.A. on Friday. The Toros hit .152 led by Elizabeth Kreider with 10 kills and nine digs. Setter Cassidy Mangum had a match-high 27 assists.

The tightly-fought second set was extended with the Toros tied the set at 25-all but a Toros attack error and a kill by CSUSB freshman Danielle Newcombe gave CSUSB the victory at 27-25.

The Toros, motivated by Friday's win, fought hard. The score was tied five times in the first set but CSUDH was never able to get the lead. In set two, the score was tied 10 times and there were two lead changes. In the final set, the score was tied six times with four lead changes before CSUSB opened the set up with a run to lead 20-11 at one point.

CSUSB had the edge in kills (42-31), assists (37-30), digs (40-34) and total blocks (5-4).

The Coyotes remain on the road next weekend, traveling to Humboldt State and Sonoma State before returning home to host Cal Poly Pomona in a midweek match on Sept. 29.
