Coyotes land 5 recruits for men's basketball

CSUSB appears set for another run at CCAA, NCAA glory

CSUSB men's basketball coach Jeff Oliver returns for his ninth season in 2010-11 with a career record of 174-59.
    Cal State San Bernardino Head Men's Basketball Coach Jeff Oliver announced on Monday that five recruits have enrolled at the university to help the Coyotes  make yet another run at California Collegiate Athletic Association and NCAA Division II titles.
    The Coyotes have eight CCAA titles, two CCAA tournament titles, three NCAA  West Region titles, and one Final Four appearance to their credit since the start of the 1998-99 season and Oliver said he is looking for more hardware in 2010-11.
    Joining the Coyotes for the coming season are:
    1. Robbie Robinson, a 6-5 senior guard-forward from Northridge who played sparingly at Cal State Fullerton last season after leading Riverside Community College to the state community college championship in 2008-09. He averaged 16 points and seven rebounds a game for the Tigers in their title run. Robinson appeared in just seven games for Cal State Fullerton, averaging 1.9 points per game. He was a prep all-star at Village Christian High School.
    2. Nate Roth, a 5-9 junior guard who led San Bernardino Valley College to a 31-3 season (14-0 in the Foothill Conference) and the state JC semifinals in 2009-10. Roth, who prepped at Ramona High School in Riverside, was the Southern California JC player of the year and Foothill Conference MVP and was an all-state first team pick. He averaged 12.8 points, 4.9 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game with 72 steals in 32 games.
    3. Kwame Alexander, a 6-7 sophomore center-forward who played for Irvine Valley College in 2008-09 as a freshman, averaging 9.5 points and eight rebounds a game with 15 blocked shots. He shot 61.6 percent from the field. Alexander prepped at Ranco Verde High School in Moreno Valley.
    4. D.J. Schumpert, a 6-7 junior forward from Tucson, Ariz., who spent two years at University of Arizona before transferring to CSUSB. As a freshman, Schumpert had a steal in two minutes of play in an NCAA tournament game against Louisville. As a sophomore, he was used sparingly in the team's 16-15 season. appearing in 10 games and averaging 1.2 points per game with seven rebounds in 21 minutes of playing time.
    5. Sydney Hall, a 6-2 junior guard transferring from San Bernardino Valley College and a teammate of Roth the past two seasons. Hall averaged 7.9 points, 3.0 assists and 2.4 rebounds a game for the Wolverines during their 31-3 season in 2009-10.
    The Coyotes four key players from last year's squad that went 23-6 overall, 17-5 in the CCAA and won the conference tournament.
    Back for their senior seasons are the all-CCAA backcourt tandem of Aaron Hill and Corey Caston along with forward David Jefferson and wing Ryan Kinney. Two redshirts figure to be in the mix this season -- 6-7 forward-center Theron Laudermill; and 6-3 guard Johnny Bell.
    The Coyotes begin pre-season drills in mid-October and will face Cal Lutheran in an exhibition game on Nov. 12 in Coussoulis Arena.
