Box Score: CSULA 59, Coyotes 57
LOS ANGELES -- The Cal State San Bernardino men's basketball team was dealt a tough loss Friday night in its CCAA opener at Cal State L.A.
The Golden Eagles held the Coyotes to only five field goals in the second half and held on for a 59-57 victory and snapped a 24-game losing streak against CSUSB.
Senior
Aaron Hill scored a team-high 14 points for the Coyotes, who are 1-2 overall and take on No. 15 Cal State Dominguez HIlls on Saturday.
The Coyotes held a 10-point lead at halftime -- 35-25 -- but was held without a field goal over a 4 1/2-minute stretch inside the game's final 10 minutes.
Ryan Kinney's 3-pointer cut CSULA's lead to 50-48 with 7:27 remaining. Hill hit four free throws during that scoreless field-goal stretch, but the Coyotes remained within close distance.
Hill's layup with 2:54 left cut the drought and pulled the Coyotes to within four -- 59-55 with 2:54 left in the game.
David Jefferson added a pair of free throws with 2:17 left, but that would complete the scoring for both teams.
After Leland Jones missed two free throws with 41 seconds left, the Coyotes worked the ball to senior
Corey Caston twice. But Jones redeemed himself and blocked both of those shots to keep the Golden Eagles up by two.
The Coyotes held the ball for the final possession, but
Robbie Robinson's three-point effort with a second remaining was off.
It was CSULA's first win over the Coyotes since owning a 54-46 victory on Jan. 9, 1999 in Los Angeles.
