Coyotes roll over Sonoma State, 75-55

CSUSB explodes for a 18-0 run in second half, gain 3-way tie for first

       Cal State San Bernardino broke open a tighty-contested game with a 18-0 run early in the second half and put away Sonoma State's upset bid with a 75-55 CCAA  conference men's basketball victory before 385 fans in Coussoulis Arena on Saturday night.
    The Coyotes improved to 5-1 and gained a three-way tie for first place with Cal Poly Pomona, which defeated Humboldt State 58-55, and Chico State, a 68-56 winner over Cal State East Bay. San Francisco State upset Cal State L.A. 55-47 to drop the Golden Eagles to 5-2 in CCAA play. HSU is now 5-3.
    Five players scored in double figures for the Coyotes, led by graduate student Bryan LeDuc with 14 points and four rebounds. Senior guard Lawrence Tyson had 13 points and seven rebounds. Senior center Devon Davis had 11 points and five boards while guards Aaron Hill and Steven Gaston had 10 points apiece.
    Patrick Scott  led the Seawolves with 15 points while Mike Nelson had 10 points and five rebounds.
    There were 49 fouls called and the teams went to the line 53 times with CSUSB shooting just 57 percent from the line and the Seawolves 63 percent.
    The Coyotes head to Cal Poly Pomona on Tuesday night for another confrontation with the Broncos at 7:30 p.m. in Kellogg Gym.
    With the win the Coyotes have now won 26 of their last 28 home games.
    Sonoma State took a 26-19 lead with 5:08 remaining in the first half on a layup by Steven Lackey but the Coyotes outscored them 12-4 to lead 31-30 at intermission on a pair of free throws by Hill.
    SSU's reserves scored 23 of the team's 30 points in the half.
    After leading scorer Steven Pratt put the Seawolves up 32-31 with a layup 31 seconds into the second half, the Coyotes went on an 18-0 run that put them ahead 49-32 with 11:34 left on a jumper by Gaston.
    CSUSB outscored the Seawolves 44-25 in the second half after solving the pesky Seawolves zone trap defense.
    The Coyotes outscored the Seawolves 14-8 in the paint in the closing half and had a 21-7 edge in points after turnovers. 
    CSUSB's defense forced 32 Sonoma turnovers, 18 of which were steals by the Coyotes. Junior point guard Corey Caston had four steals to go with five assists and eight points. Davis, at 6-7, had a career high six steals to go with four assists and 11 points for CSUSB.
    The Coyotes were fairly sloppy themselves, turning the ball over 24 times in the contest.
    CSUSB shot 48 percent for the game, but 59 percent in the final half (15 of 27) but were just 15 of 26 from the foul line. Sonoma State shot 38 percent for the game and were a frigid 7 for 24 in the second half (29 percent). SSU hit just two of 15 three-point attempts,f urther damaging its cause.
