SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco State spoiled Cal State San Bernardino's bid to finish the first round of CCAA conference play with only one loss, defeating the Coyotes 67-61 Saturday night in the Main Gym.
The loss dropped the Coyotes to 9-2 in the conference and 11-4 overall. Bryan LeDuc had a big game for the Coyotes with 17 points and 16 rebounds while Aaron Hill had a team-high 18 points, 13 of them from the foul line. Devon Davis added 10 points.
Marquel Hoskins, a 5-10 guard,  led the Gators with 26 points, five assists and five steals and a team-high seven rebounds. Phoenix O'Rourke aided the Gators cause with 14 points and three steals before fouling out late in the second half.
CSUSB trailed 31-25 at halftime but caught up at 40-40 with 15:10 left.
Later, the Coyotes took a 56-55 lead only to have Hoskins drain a three-pointer for a 58-56 Gators lead with two minutes left in the game.
Hill had a chance to tie but missed two free throws with 57 seconds left after hitting 11 of his first 14 foul shots. Hoskins then gave the Gators a 63-58 lead but LeDuc knocked down a three-pointer with 30 seconds left to make it 63-61.
However, the Gators made a pair of free throws by Nefi Perdomo to make it a two-possession game with 14 seconds left and finished the game with two points on a goaltending call in the final second.
CSUSB committed an uncharacteristic 21 turnovers in the game, in part because point guard Corey Caston was limited to just 19 minutes by foul trouble. Caston finished with three points, three assists and a pair of steals.
Ten of the Coyote turnovers came on steals by the Gators.
The Coyotes had one of their worst shooting nights of the season, hitting just 40 percent from the field (17 of 43) but made 22 of 31 foul shots. The Gators sent Hill to the foul line 18 times and he made 13.
The Gators outscored San Bernardino 24-16 in the paint and outscored them 21-8 in points off turnovers -- that's a 45-24 edge in those two categories.
The score was tied nine times and the lead changed hands four times. The Coyotes led by as many as five points early in the first half and the Gators were up by their biggest margin, eight points, late in the first half.
The Gators made 22 of their 26 foul shots (85 percent).
The Coyotes return home to prepare to face Cal State East Bay in Hayward on Thursday night followed by a plane flight to San Diego to face UCSD on Saturday night.
