Cal State San Bernardino finished off a grueling five-game stretch in nine days Saturday night with a 75-57 victory over Cal State Dominguez Hills that put them two games ahead in the loss column of their nearest rivals in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
The Coyotes, 10-3 overall and 8-1 in the CCAA, had five players score in double figures for the second straight night as CSUSB finished the nine days with a 5-0 record. The Toros dropped to 5-9 overall and 5-4 in the CCAA.
Junior point guard Corey Caston led the Coyotes with 18 points and three assists while senior guard Lawrence Tyson had 17 points and three asssits.     Michael Cox led the Toros with 17 points and seven rebounds while Tim McLaurin had 11 points and Tim McGrath finished with 10 points.
"If we can win two on the road at San Francisco and Monterey Bay next week, it would be ginormous," said a happy Coyotes Head Coach Jeff Oliver.
LeDuc scored nine of his 11 points in the first half as the Coyotes managed a 29-25 halftime lead on Stater Bros. Coyote Youth Spirit Night before a Coussoulis Arena crowd of 792.
CSUSB started fast, going up 21-8 in the first 10 minutes and then the Toros responded with a 12-2 reun that got them to within three at 23-20 with 5:15 left to intermission.
Cox hit back-to-back layups in the first minute of the second half to give the Toros the lead at 30-29 but Tyson responded with a three-pointer to put the Coyotes up 32-30. The teams were tied at 34- and 36-all but the Coyotes went on an 11-1 run to lead 47-37 with 12:27 on a trey by Caston.
Later, junior guard Aaron Hill hit an NBA-length 3-pointer, his first field goal in 20 attempts over three games this week to give CSUSB a 65-48 lead with 4:34 left. Hill contributed four steals and two assists to go with seven points.
The Coyotes scored 24 points off Toros turnovers while CSUDH had 15 points off Coyote miscues. The Coyotes outscored the Toros 26-22 in the lane.
CSUSB shot 64 percent in the second half (16 of 25) and 47 percent for the game (25-53) and made 18 of 19 foul shots (95 percent). The Toros shot 44 percent for the game (21-48) and outrebounded the Coyotes 33-24 but committed 21 turnovers to just 10 for CSUSB.
The Coyotes go on the road next week to play at Monterey Bay and San Francisco State.
Thanks to Sonoma State's 77-58 win over Chico State, the Coyotes' nearest foes in CCAA play have three losses. Humboldt State is in second place at 7-3 followed by Cal State L.A., a winner over Cal Poly Pomona, at 6-3, Chico State at 5-3 and a three-way tie between S.F.
