Brown earns 3rd CCAA honor

6-7 junior center dominated in two weekend road victories for Coyotes

Brandon Brown
Brandon Brown, the Cal State San Bernardino junior center from New Orleans, Monday was voted the Wilson-California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball player of the week for the third time this season and second time in two weeks.
Brown, a 6-7 transfer from Holmes Community College in Mississippi, demonstrated just how dominant he can be by averaging 30 points, nine rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.0 steals per game as the Coyotes rolled over Chico State 84-67 and Cal State Stanislaus 76-55.
His 39 point-performance against Chico State was the highest single-game scoring mark since Trenell Eddings canned 39 points, most of them from three-point range, in the Coyotes overtime semifinal loss to University of Alaska-Fairbanks in the 2004 West Region semifinals. Ironically, Brown stepped out and hit four of five attempts from the three-point line against the Wildcats.
Brown was eight points shy of the all-time single-game scoring record of 47 set by all-American Mark Warren back in 1987-88 when the school was an NCAA Division III independent.
His most complete game came on Saturday against Cal State Stanislaus where he had 21 points, 12 rebounds (for his seventh double-double of the season), a team-high four assists and three blocked shots.
For the season, Brown is averaging 19.5 points and 8.9 rebounds a game with 24 blocked shots and he is shooting 53.5 percent from the field.
Brown wasn't eligible to play until the Fall Quarter ended in early December and in his first game with the team, the Coyotes lost to Grand Canyon 76-71 at the CCAA-PacWest Shootout in Las Vegas. Since then CSUSB is 11-2 and has moved into sole possession of first place in the CCAA at 11-3, 13-7 overall.
However, this week is a pivotal one for the Coyotes, currently ranked No. 10 in the West Region, pending a new poll that is due out Wednesday.
The Coyotes face Cal Poly Pomona (9-5) on Wednesday night in Kellogg Gym on the Pomona campus, which has been a tough place for them to win in recent years. Then it's on to UC San Diego, also 9-5 entering the week, on Saturday night. Both teams are ranked ahead of the Coyotes in the region poll despite the fact the Coyotes beat both of them at home in January.
Both games will be carried live on KCAA 1050-AM with Mitch McClellan and Brett Malak courtside at 7:30 p.m. and simulcast on the web at www.csusbathletics.com (click on listen live).
