Coyotes sweep Otters, 2-1, 9-1

Haas homer wins opener; Brooks handcuffs CSUMB on three-hitter in nightcap

Aaron Brooks pitched a complete-game 3-hitter with 7 strikeouts in win over Monterey Bay Saturday.
Senior Johnnie Haas slammed a two-out, two-run, walkoff home run in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday to give Cal State San Bernardino a come-from-behind, 2-1, victory over Cal State Monterey Bay in the first game of their CCAA baseball doubleheader at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.
The Coyotes came right back to take the seven-inning second game, 9-1, behind the three-hit pitching of freshman Aaron Brooks and some welcome timely hitting by the Coyotes hitters who fashioned 12 hits off four Otters pitchers.
CSUSB evened its season record at 8-8 and improved to 4-3 in the CCAA as they prepare to play the Otters at 11 a.m. Sunday in the finale of the four-game series. The Otters slipped to 3-17 overall and 0-7 in the CCAA.
The first game featured a terrific pitching duel between CSUSB's Joe Martinez and the Otters' Norman Hebert that kept the game scoreless into the ninth inning.
Martinez had allowed only one hit until Ryan Chagonjian singled to center to lead off the ninth. Jace Fanner pinch-ran for Chagonjian. Steve Mays hit a dribbler toward the mound that Martinez fielded but threw wildly to second in an effort to force out Fanner, sending the runner to third.
CSUSB Coach Don Parnell replaced Martinez (8 innings plus, two hits, two walks, six strikeouts) with junior Ian O'Connor. O'Conner got Matt DeJesus to ground out to first while Fanner held at third. O'Connor then walked Jacob Flores intentionally to load the bases looking for a double play or force play at the plate.
O'Connor struck out Andrew Marquardt but with two out, he hit Andrew DeGarmo with a pitch to force in an unearned run and give the Otters a shot at victory, 1-0. O'Connor got out of the bases-loaded jam by getting Brent Sargenti to ground out to shortstop.
The Coyotes, who had eight hits off Hebert in the first eight innings, stranding 10 runners, got a spark from sophomore catcher Chris LeFay who hit a dart inside the bag at third for a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice by junior Brent Planck.
Haas promptly belted a Hebert offering over the wall in right field for a two-run, game-winning homer, his first of the season, giving him a team-leading 13 RBI on the season. O'Connor got credit for the win in relief while Hebert took a tough luck loss in front of a supportive band of Otters rooters.
In game two, the Otters got a run in the first inning on two hits and a Coyote error, then Brooks shut the door on them over the next six innings, fanning seven Otters while walking none and allowing just one more hit the rest of the way. he struck out the side in the seventh to close out the game.
Meanwhile the Coyotes took a 2-1 lead in the third, added two more in the fourth and then broke open the game with a five-run fifth sparked by Jordan Lowe's leadoff home run.  Two Otters errors contributed to the CSUSB success in the inning.
Haas finished the four-for-eight in the doubleheader with four runs scored. Lowe and Dworak each had two hits in the nightcap along with Shea Davis of Monterey Bay. Kyle Davis and LeFay each had a pair of hits in the first game.
