Cal State San Bernardino opened the game with nine straight points and were never headed thereafter, breezing to a 73-57 victory over UC San Diego Friday night in the California Collegiate Athletic Association conference opener for both teams before 612 fans in Coussoulis Arena.
The Coyotes, now 1-2 on the season and 1-0 in the CCAA, will host the conference's newest member, Cal State East Bay, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday night while the Tritons (0-3 overall, 0-1 in the CCAA) head to Pomona to play Cal Poly Pomona.
Bryan LeDuc was a perfect 7-for-7 from the field and finished with a team-high 16 points to go with five rebounds to pace the Coyotes. Devon Davis chipped in 14 points and four rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting and guard Aaron Hill contributed 13 points, nine assists, five rebounds and two steals.
Tyler Acevedo came off the bench to score a game-high 18 points for the Tritons, hitting four of nine from three-point range and dishing off three assists in 30 minutes of play. Christian Hatch had a game-high nine rebounds to go with eight points for UCSD.
The Coyotes singed the nets with 57 percent shooting (29 of 51) and made 6 of 13 from beyond the arc (46 percent) while the Tritons struggled, hitting just 34 percent of their shots (20 of 59) and were just six of 20 from the three (30 percent).
UCSD did manage to outrebound the hosts, 33-32. CSUSB piled up 23 assists to just 11 for the Tritons.
Cal State San Bernardino opened with a 9-0 run and led 40-26 at the half but the Tritons rallied to get within six at 42-36 on a three by Acevedo but the Coyotes ran off nine straight points capped by a three from Hill and a jumper from Davis to lead 51-36 with 12:45 left in the game.
UCSD trimmed the lead to 10 at 51-41 but the Coyotes pulled away gain to lead 60-41 with 6:48 left on two free throws by senior Lawrence Tyson. The lead increased to 20 at 65-45 with 3:51 left on two more free throws by Tyson.
The Coyotes outscored the Tritons in the paint 26-18 but UCSD's bench outscored the Coyote reserves 32-14, led by Acevedo.
