Coyotes sweep past Toros, 3-0

CSUSB extends home win streak to 23; now 16-0 in 2009

   Cal State San Bernardino extended its home winning streak to 23 games and its 2009 season win streak to 16 without a loss Saturday night with a 3-0 sweep of CCAA conference opponent Cal State Dominguez Hills. 
    The Coyotes are now 16-0 on the season and 9-0 in the CCAA to maintain their hold on first place. They did it in dominant fashion, taking the first two sets from the Toros 25-9 and 25-12. The scrappy Toros put up a good fight in set three before falling 25-21. 
    The Toros, in 11th place in the CCAA, are now 1-15 on the season and 1-8 in the CCAA. 
    Head Coach Kim Cherniss used all 14 players on her bench and junior outside hitter Jane Chafeh with eight kills on .444 hitting. Sophomore Samantha Middleborn had seven kills on .700 hitting with a pair of block assists. 
    Junior Nicole Moore, sophomore Megan Johnson and sophomore Morgan Carty each contributed six kills as CSUSB hit .391 for the match while the Toros were helfd to .089 hitting. CSUSB had 46 kills to 22 for the Toros. 
    Samantha Maxwell had a team-high nine kills and four block assists for the Toros. Hilary Hougardy had 14 digs and Cassidy Mangum had 15 assists. 
    CSUSB used three setters in the match. Sara Hoffman, Camille Smith and Alyssa Auck combined for 41 assists. Smith also had nine digs to lead the team. 
    In the competitive third set, Dominguez Hills got out to a 4-2 lead in a set that featured 10 tie scores and six lead changes. The Toros led 16-14 on a Coyote attack error, but a pair of kills by CSUSB freshman Rachel Taylor and two Toros errors put CSUSB up 18-16. 
    The Coyotes outscored the Toros 7-4 in the final moments with Taylor getting the match-winning kill on match point, off an assist by Auck. 
    The victory puts Cherniss within two wins of her 400th career victory as head coach of the Coyotes.
