Almost everything is new when it comes to the 2009 edition of the Cal State San Bernardino
women's water polo team.
Two new coaches. Ten new players.
Only four players return from the 2008 team that posted a 22-15 record and captured four of five matches in the Western Water Polo Association championship tournament to finish in fifth place.
Gone is Head Coach Tom Finwall, who resigned after six seasons and a 132-102 record to be the head coach at Riverside Poly High School.
Gone are three-time NCAA Div. II all-American
Freyja Berg and three-time collegiate all-American
Sabrina Marquez, who completed their four years of eligibility in 2008 along with several other starters.
Interim Head Coach Lorenzo Maya and Assistant Coach Sara Reneker, a former CSUSB all-American, welcomed back four players from last season headed by junior two-meter player
Kaitlin Hartman and sophomore goalkeeper
Bryanna Burns. Also back are sophomores
Jennifer Goetz and
Gloria Esqueda.
Maya has seven freshmen on his 2009 roster, indicating the Coyotes are short on experience and in need of some seasoning, starting Saturday when the Coyotes play Cal Baptist and UC Santa Barbara in the Lancers Tournament in Riverside. CSUSB plays CBU at 11 a.m. and UCSB at 2:30 p.m.
On Sunday, the Coyotes will play a pair of matches at University of Redlands' Thompson Aquatic Center, taking on the host Bulldogs at 2:30 p.m. and Pomona Pitzer.
Then, on Feb. 1, CSUSB plays three matches at the UC Irvine tournament, taking on the host Anteaters at 11:30 a.m. before playing Hartwick College and Pomona Pitzer.
CSUSB will look to Hartman to provide the offensive leadership. The junior from Seattle, WA., had 48 goals, 41 assists, 33 steals and 32 ejections drawn in 2008. She has 114 goals, 73 assists, 73 steals and 105 ejections drawn in her two-year career. Her 105 ejections drawn ranks her fifth on the CSUSB career list.
Burns, from Oceanside, had a solid freshman season in goal for the Coyotes, making 325 saves, ranking her No. 4 on the all-time single season save list, with 22 assists and 43 steals. She was voted to the WWPA all-freshman team.
Sophomore
Jennifer Goetz of Whittier produced eight goals, 18 assists and 19 steals in a reserve role for CSUSB as a freshman in 2008.
Among the newcomers to the team is
Marilyn Doughty, a two-year star at Chaffey College where she was second-team all-conference and an all-American in water polo and swimming. The other is
Kelsey Morino of Corona, a junior from Concordia University Irvine.
Three former Jurupa Valley High School (Riverside) players are on the 2009 roster – freshman goalkeeper
Sara Kelley, her sister, sophomore utility player
Anna Kelley and freshman utility player Lashelle Kocher. Two former players at Riverside's John W. North High School are also on the roster – freshman
Emily Hove and freshman utility player
Misty Vu.
Maya has been an assistant coach for the team during most of Finwall's tenure while Reneker played four years for Finwall, the last in 2006, and also coached at J.W. North HS in Riverside. She is the team's all-time single season record holder for goals scored (117) and ranks No. 2 on the career list behind
Freyja Berg at 324. Reneker is also No. 1 in career ejections drawn (210).
