Jim Maier

In three seasons, Jim Maier has elevated the CSUSB softball program into one of the top programs in the West Region and in the CCAA.

Maier and the Coyotes returned to the NCAA Tournament for only the third time in school history in 2017 and reached the CCAA Tournament for the first time in nine seasons after a record-setting 38-21 overall season and a school-record best 27-13, second-place finish in the CCAA. The 38 victories were the program's most in 19 years.

The Coyotes have enjoyed three successive 20-win conference seasons — a first in the history of the program — and their current run of three consecutive winning seasons also is the best in CSUSB history. Prior to Maier's arrival, CSUSB had never enjoyed consecutive winning seasons since becoming a Division II member in 1992.

After accepting the job one month before the 2015 season opener, Maier and the Coyotes finished 28-24 overall and won 20 CCAA games for the first time in school history, finishing one-half game back of a CCAA Tournament berth. Led by All-American shortstop Nicole Nobbe, the Coyotes placed three players on the All-CCAA squads with Nobbe, LHP Cassandra Williams and CF Victoria Lievanos.

The Coyotes gave their head coach his 500th career victory in a 3-1 win over Stanislaus State on Feb. 27, 2016, right here at CSUSB.

Maier spent 2001-13 as head softball coach at CSUDH, where he led his teams to 12 winning seasons, an average of 35 victories a year for a 460-273-2 overall record (a .627 winning percentage). The Toros received seven NCAA Tournament berths in his tenure, won two CCAA championships (2005 and 2012) and advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen twice (2012-13). He was the CCAA Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2012.

At CSUDH, he coached 62 All-CCAA players, four All-Americans who earned seven total honors and 22 Toros earned All-West Region honors.

After stepping down from the CSUDH post following 2013, he returned to St. Paul High School in Santa Fe Springs, where he became the Dean of Students. He also continued his coaching career and helped the school win the 2014 CIF and state softball championships and was named California's coach of the year in his only year at the helm.

Maier had two stints at St. Paul HS. Prior to taking the CSUDH job in 2000, he compiled a 300-78 record while leading the program to seven conference titles, 14 consecutive CIF playoff berths and the 1988 CIF Division I state championship. He coached 25 players who earned college scholarships, including nine at the NCAA Division I level.  He also coached 17 different All-CIF players including CIF Player of the Year Keri Kropke, who later earned All-American honors at Cal.

A 1987 graduate of Cal State Fullerton, Maier earned his master's degree from Azusa Pacific University in 1995.  Maier and wife Lori reside in La Habra and are the parents of three sons: Jake, Jared and Kyle. Jake plays quarterback at UC Davis and was named the 2017 Big Sky Conference Newcomer of the Year as a sophomore.
