Biography
2006-07 – Ortiz was an integral part of the Coyotes’ “monster” defense and aggressive offensive play that enabled the team to post a 26-6 record and win a regional title and advance to the Final Four. He averaged 5.9 points but was second in assists (83) and second in steals with 53 on a team that was the nation’s best at pilfering the ball. He played in all 32 games, starting 12 times. He scored in double figures eight times with the highest output 15 points (against CSU Stanislaus) and a season-high six assists in win over Central Washington.
BEFORE CAL STATE: Ortiz was the 2005-06 Orange Coast College player of the year and earned first-team all-conference honors both years at OCC. He averaged 13.2 points and 5.3 assists a game for the Pirates, who posted a 22-11 record. He had a season single-game high of 39 points.
HIGH SCHOOL: He played four years of basketball at Mission Viejo HS, graduating in 2003, earning second-team all-league honors.
PERSONAL: Ortiz is an accounting major with a minor in finance. Away from the court he enjoys watching movies, playing video games and hanging out with friends. He has been a volunteer youth basketball coach. His parents are Ignacio and Sally Ortiz.
