CSUSB Athletics Announces Departure of Head Men's Basketball Coach Gus Argenal

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - California State University San Bernardino men's basketball head coach Gus Argenal will be stepping down from his role after accepting the same position at the Division I level.

Argenal spent two seasons in San Bernardino, compiling an overall record of 50-20.

In 2023-24, his first season at the helm, he led the Coyotes to a West Regional Championship and a Final Four appearance. The Yotes also won a CCAA Regular Season Championship, and the team finished with a record of 27-8.

In his second season, the Coyotes battled injuries all season long, but Argenal was still able to guide his team to an NCAA Tournament berth. The Yotes were ranked atop the D2CCA West Region poll for the majority of the season, and won an NCAA Tournament game over Biola.

"I'm proud of the job Gus and his staff have done here at CSUSB," said Shareef Amer, Director of Athletics at CSUSB. "Gus is a tremendous man, and I'm excited to see him realize his career goal of becoming a Division I head coach. I wish him and his family nothing but the best of luck in this next chapter."

A national search for the next head coach of Cal State San Bernardino men's basketball will begin immediately.

"While we say goodbye to Gus, we are also excited to begin the search for our next head coach," said Amer. "CSUSB men's basketball has a storied history. We've won five West Region Championships, and appeared in the last five NCAA Tournaments. This is an elite coaching job, and I look forward to identifying our next leader that will hopefully help us win the one trophy that is missing from this team's collection - a national championship."
