Yotes Dominate CCAA Awards; Mickens, Shuler, and Newman Receive Special Honors

TURLOCK, Calif. – For the second consecutive season, all five of the CSUSB men's basketball starters were named All-CCAA. In addition to the first and second team honors, Darius Mickens was named CCAA Defensive Player of the Year, Dontrell Shuler was named CCAA Newcomer of the Year, and head coach Andy Newman was named CCAA Coach of the Year.

Andy Newman – CCAA Coach of the Year
For the second straight season, Andy Newman has been named CCAA Coach of the Year. In his fourth full season at the helm, Newman led the Yotes to one of their most successful seasons in program history in 2022-23. The No. 8 ranked Yotes went an impressive 25-3 in the regular season and 20-2 in conference, being nationally-ranked for the entirety of the regular season and capturing the CCAA regular season title. The Yotes also went a perfect 11-0 at home and finished the regular season on a 10-game winning streak. Newman's success could not have been accomplished without strong support, that being assistant coaches Jordan Jamestown, Scott Cutley, and Timmy Falls.

Newman has done an incredible job coaching the dynamic team on both sides of the ball, with the team ranking first in the nation in rebounding while also displaying a potent offense. In fact, the 2022-23 team will go down as the greatest scoring team in CSUSB history, as their first basket in Friday's game will break the team single-season scoring record, set by 2006-07 team with 2,520 points.

"I'm very happy for Darius and Dontrell to receive these two individual awards. Mick leads the league in rebounding and has been shutting down the opposing teams best player all year. For him to receive Defensive Player of the Year is very well deserved and I'm happy to see his hard work being recognized. Dontrell being awarded Newcomer of the Year is also a great individual accolade for one of the most dynamic scorers in the league. His ability to play on both ends of the floor has been a huge piece to our success this year." – Head Coach Andy Newman

Darius Mickens – CCAA Defensive Player of the Year & First Team All-CCAA
Mickens proved himself to be one of the most elite defenders in the country in 2022-23, earning him CCAA Defensive Player of the Year. This is the second consecutive season CSUSB has taken home the defensive award. In his third year as a Yote, Mickens led the team and CCAA with 243 rebounds, 8.7 rebounds per game, and 52 steals – ranking top 50 in the country in each category. He also ranked second on the team in blocks with 21 and assists with 96, as well as third on the team in total minutes with 830.

Dontrell Shuler – CCAA Newcomer of the Year & First Team All-CCAA
Shuler made an immediate impact for the Yotes, winning CCAA Player of the Week in his first two games wearing the Blue & Black. He would go on to win another Player of the Week during Feb. 13-19. Shuler was a core piece of the Yotes' record-breaking season, scoring the second-most points on the team with 483. The junior shot 47 percent from the field while making the second-most treys on the season at 49. Shuler's presence added depth to the already strong offense, scoring 20+ points in ten separate games to propel the Yotes to average 90.0 points per game in the regular season. He also led the team with 932 minutes played and 110 free throws made. Because of the immediate impact Shuler had on the best CSUSB team in 15 years, he was named CCAA Newcomer of the Year.

Brandon Knapper – First Team All-CCAA
Already one of the best players to ever wear a CSUSB uniform, Knapper continued his scoring dominance in the 2022-23 season. In addition to being named back-to-back First Team All-CCAA, Knapper was also named to both the Bevo Francis Top 100 and Top 50 watchlists. In November, Knapper was named to the 2022 Hoops in Hawaii Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament team after scoring 45 points in two games.

His 94 treys made is the third most in a season in CSUSB history, and he is likely to move into second place (currently 96) during the game on Friday. On Saturday, he moved into fourth place on the CSUSB all-time scoring list with his 1,031st point - all in just 51 games played for the Yotes. In addition, Knapper is just 11 threes away from breaking the CSUSB all-time three-point record (188). After being named a First Team All-American last season, Knapper followed that up with another 500-point season, finishing this year with 509. Knapper led the Yotes in field goals made (173), three points made (94), points (509), points per game (19.6), and assists (104).

The Ontario, CA native was the heartbeat of the Yotes' offense and looks to lead the No. 8 Yotes to a deep postseason run.

Eddie Davis – First Team All-CCAA
Davis has been a consistent threat for the Yotes all season, ranking top three on the team in steals (34), field goals made (141), free throws made (64), points scored (363), offensive rebounds (59), defensive rebounds (121), total rebounds (180), and average rebounds per game (6.7). The Port Salerno, FL native finished the regular season with an impressive stretch of 16 consecutive games with at least 10 points scored. He also had a stretch of three consecutive double-doubles, scoring 42 points with 30 rebounds during that time. Davis was also named to the 2022 Hoops in Hawaii Thanksgiving Classic All-Tournament team in November. After being named All-CCAA Honorable Mention in 2021-22, Davis' efforts this season earned him First Team All-CCAA.

Robby Robinson – Second Team All-CCAA
The big man helped the Yotes become the best rebounding team in the nation, ranking first as a team in both rebound margin and rebounds per game. The San Diego native ranked second on the team in total rebounds (243) and rebounds per game (8.3), while also finishing first on the team in offensive rebounds (94). Robinson finished with five double-doubles on the season while scoring 20+ points twice. He also recorded double-digit rebounds in 10 games this season. For his dominance on the glass and inside the paint, Robinson earned Second Team All-CCAA in his first season as a Yote.

CCAA Tournament
The Yotes look for redemption in the CCAA Tournament this weekend after falling in the championship game last season. They will play on Friday at 2:30 PM against the winner of #4 Cal Poly Humboldt and #5 Sonoma State.
