Yotes Close Out Season With Tie at San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Calif. -  The CSUSB women's soccer team closed out the 2022 season on Thursday afternoon, tying with Cal State San Marcos 0-0 in the final game of the regular season.

The Yotes finish the season with a 7-6-4 (.529) overall record, while placing ninth in the CCAA standings with a 3-4-4 (.455) conference record. This is the first time since 2016 that the Yotes have finished a season with a winning percentage above .500, and it is their best conference win percentage since that same year.

Thursday's match featured two balanced teams, both putting up similar shot totals and recording an equal number of saves. The Cougars opened the game in full force, firing off nearly half of their 12 shots in the first 20 minutes of the game. The Yotes put up four shots in the first half, while attempting another five in the second.

Despite shots from seven different players, including multiple from Katherine Walker and Jessica Hernandez, the Yotes were unable to convert a goal. With the Cougars facing the same difficulty, the game ended in a 0-0 tie.

Senior goalkeeper Carly Luna recorded six saves in the game, the fifth time she has done so this season. Luna and Kayla Ceballos split time in goal to shut down CSUSM's offense, which is the ninth time the Yotes' goalkeepers have shut out an opponent this season. Luna is responsible for seven solo shutouts on the year, bringing her career total to 14. This puts her tied for third place in CSUSB's record book for most career shutouts.

"There will be plenty of time to reflect on the season in the coming weeks, but the initial feeling now that it's over is bitter sweet. We have to be pleased with the progress we have made as a team, but each of us have hoped for more from this season. Still plenty of great moments, memories made, and lessons learned. I hope we can look back in a few years and view this season as the beginning of something special." - Head Coach Mark Peters
