SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The CSUSB men's basketball team was ranked No. 10 in
NCAA.com's DII Power Rankings on Tuesday afternoon. The only other school in the west region to be considered was Cal State San Marcos, who were among the first five out of the rankings. Not surprisingly, reigning national champion Northwest Missouri State was ranked No. 1, as they have won four out of the last five national titles dating back to the 2016-17 season.
"The CCAA was wild last year, with three teams looking like title contenders… and honestly, not much has changed. I picked the Coyotes as the best of the bunch because three of the top four scorers are back, including All-American Brandon Knapper. Three big Division I transfers step in to fill the depth lost to graduation." – Wayne Cavadi, NCAA.com
The Yotes are coming off an impressive 24-4 season that ended in the second round of the NCAA Tournament earlier this year. The 'Dino Boyz look to make their third consecutive trip to the tournament this season under the leadership of head coach
Andy Newman. In his three seasons at the helm, Newman has accumulated a 60-26 overall record, good for a .698-win percentage.
"We are really looking forward to getting the 2022-23 season started. We are going to be a really fun team to watch in that we'll play fast and score a ton of points.
We are fortunate to return 3 of our 4 leading scorers from last season in Brandon Knapper, Darius Mickens, and Eddie Davis. Those three have been impressive to watch in practice so far, as their chemistry continues to build off last season.
We are also very fortunate to have added three significant Division I transfers to the fold. Dontrell Shular from Middle Tennessee State, Sedrick Altman from Rider, and Robby Robinson from New Orleans. These three have had a huge impact so far in practice and will help us compete for a CCAA and Western Region Championship.
It is an honor to be recognized in the pre-season Power 10 rankings and we hope to show how deserving we are when November finally comes." – Head Coach Andy Newman
