Coyotes split Pioneers' doubleheader

HAYWARD (April 28, 2017) Cassandra Williams tied the school record with her 21st win and Jessica Brown unloaded a leadoff solo home run as the Coyotes earned a split with host Cal State East Bay on Friday, losing the opener 3-2 and winning the second 4-2.

CSUSB (35-17, 25-13 CCAA) conclude the regular season Saturday against the Pioneers  (27-23, 19-17). The Coyotes and Sonoma State are tied for fourth in the CCAA race, one game back of Chico State.

Game 1: CSU East Bay 3, Coyotes 2
A devastating two-run play in which the Pioneers scored on a wild pitch and subsequent throwing error cost the Coyotes in the opener.

The Pioneers struck in the second and made the Coyotes pay with two outs and the bases loaded. A wild pitch from Cassandra Williams brought in Ali Cerminara from third, and the Pioneers scored again on the same play on catcher Jessica Brown's throwing error that allowed Tanya Galvan in.

The Coyotes tied the game at 2-2 in the fourth. Taylor Ancona singled on her 13th pitch through the right side that scored Morgan Ratliff, who led off with a single to right. Two batters later, Jessica Angulo drove in Brown on an error charged to the short.

Angulo was credited with the RBI.

But CSUEB got the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth on Emilie Portesi's sacrifce fly to right that scored Anabella Serafin.

Williams struck out three, walked two and hit two batters in six innings. It was her first loss in her last 11 decisions as she is now 20-10 for the year.

The Coyotes had only four hits. Brown and Angulo had the other singles.

Game 2: Coyotes 4, CSU East Bay 2
The Coyotes came out swinging right away, scoring three runs on three hits and one error in the first. Brown connected on a long ball over the right-field wall. It was her 12th of the season, tied for eighth in season history at CSUSB. She now has 23 in her career, ranking fifth all time.

After Angulo and Ratliff reached on a single and a fielder's choice, respectively, Taylor Ancona hit a single up the middle to score her teammates and CSUSB led 3-0.

CSUSB got its fourth run in the fifth when Ancona's fly ball to center was dropped, scoring Ratliff, who walked to begin the inning.

CSUEB scored its run on homers — one from Sarah Fukushima and the other from Cerminara.

Amanda Ramirez drew the start and went 3 2/3 innings before Williams came on in the fourth. Ramirez threw one-hit ball through three innings with two strikeouts, but the Pioneers threatened with runners on the corners and two outs when coach Jim Maier beckoned for Williams, who induced a pop out to end the threat.

The Coyotes did not have a hit after the second inning. Angulo had two of the Coyotes' four hits.

Williams tied the school record season wins and shares with Holly Bradford, who had 21 in 1998. She had two strikeouts and allowed four hits.
