POMONA (Feb. 28, 2017) — A scoring drought cost CSUSB its shot at advancing in the CCAA Tournament.
The Coyotes went six minutes without a field goal in the fourth quarter and Cal Poly Pomona took advantage, handing the Coyotes a 54-49 loss Tuesday night at Kellogg Arena
Mya Johnson led the Coyotes with 15 points and fellow senior
Casie Johnson followed with 14.
CSUSB led by seven in the early going of the second half when
Casie Johnson hit a 3-pointer that put it ahead 33-26 with 9:19 to go in the third quarter. CPP cut the lead on a 6-0 run thereafter and for largely the rest of the way it was a one-possession game.
The six-minute field goal drought proved detrimental because CPP also had difficulty scoring. A 3-pointer from CPP's Dominique Dawson pushed the Broncos ahead 49-46 with 5:28 to go.
Mya Johnson added a free throw that cut the deficit to 49-47 with 3:23 left, but Chelsea Waddy-Blow extended CPP's lead to four on a layup with 2:14 to go.
Neither team scored again until
Mya Johnson hit a layup that drew the Coyotes to within two (51-49) with just 19 seconds left. On CPP's next possession, Waddy-Blow scored on a layup and that effectively ended the Coyotes' season.
CSUSB played much better than in its previous two games against the Broncos. The Coyotes controlled much of the first half and went into halftime leading, 30-26.
CSUSB ended its season 15-10, the third straight winning season for the program.
CPP (17-10) advances to the CCAA Tournament semifinals against Cal State East Bay. Waddy-Blow led with 17 points.
