SAN BERNARDINO (December 17, 2017) — CSUSB turned aside a few unsightly losing streaks Tuesday night and left Coussoulis Arena victorious in its 70-65 victory over CCAA-leading Cal Poly Pomona.
What CSUSB accomplished
The Coyotes' victory snapped a seven-game losing streak against CPP with their first win over the Broncos since Nov. 26, 2013. CSUSB also won for the first time in Coussoulis Arena in seven seasons. Not since the Coyotes' 64-55 win on Feb. 22, 2011, had CSUSB turned back the Broncos on the CSUSB court. The victory also halted this season's three-game losing streak and puts coach
Jeff Oliver's crew with a good feeling heading into the holiday break.
Playing tough D
CSUSB took the lead for good at 10:54 in the first half on
Ajon Efferson's jumper that put CSUSB up 15-13. The Coyotes allowed just seven CPP field goals in the first half on 28-percent shooting with a 29-24 halftime lead. CSUSB pushed the lead to as many as 18 points with 12:07 left in the game.
Fought off the Broncos
CPP (7-2, 4-1) conducted a 26-11 run to pull within three on a pair of Phoenix Shackleford free throws with 4:57 left. The Coyotes remained out front when sophomore guard
Justin Frazier stepped up for the shot of the game. Leading 65-63 with 45 seconds left, Frazier worked himself free for a 3-pointer just in front of the CSUSB bench. His shot hit nothing but twine and that was enough to stave off the Broncos.
Leading the way
Senior
Jacardo Hawkins led CSUSB (4-6, 2-4 CCAA) with 16 points along with eight rebounds.
Blake McBride added 12, and
Elijah Brown and
T.A. Dixon each had 11. The Coyotes shot 87 percent from the line on 20 of 23 shots and hit eight 3's.
What's next?
CSUSB is off for the holiday break and returns to Coussoulis on Dec. 29 against Cal State East Bay.
