SAN BERNARDINO (Dec. 29, 2016) — A much better defensive effort and key shooting from
Everett Turner,
Khleem Perkins and
Eli Brown helped the Coyotes in their 59-56 CCAA victory over Stanislaus State on Thursday night at Coussoulis Arena.
Turner and Perkins tied for game-high scoring honors with 16 points and Brown added 14 as CSUSB snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 6-4 overall and 2-3 conference.
A late, first-half run allowed the Coyotes to get back into the game against the Warriors (4-7, 1-3). Stanislaus State enjoyed a 30-20 lead with 5:15 remaining before CSUSB answered with an impressive 13-3 run to tie the game at 33 with 1:05 left.
Turner scored five in the rally and Brown added four that put the Coyotes in position for a much better second half.
Neither team led by more than four in the second half. After the game was tied for the 10
th time (54-54) with 2:50 remaining, Perkins hit a key 3-pointer that put the Coyotes ahead for good.
The San Bernardino native hit a shot from the left wing that pushed CSUSB out front 57-54 with 2:11 left. The Warriors closed to within a point, but Brown later responded with a put-back that gave the Coyotes a 59-55 lead with 42 seconds left and they held on for the win.
CSUSB, despite shooting just 32.7 percent on 18-of-55 shooting, dug in thanks to its defense. The Coyotes forced 19 turnovers, and outscored their foe 19-6 off turnovers.
Turner led the Coyotes in rebounds with eight, and
Phil Reed had three blocks with seven boards.
Kyle Gouveia led Stanislaus State with 14.
