ELLENSBURG, Wash. (Nov. 25, 2016) — An all-important West Region contest favored CSUSB after a stellar second half of shooting in the Coyotes' 66-52 victory over host Central Washington in women's basketball Friday afternoon.
Sabrea Coleman scored 12 of her team-high 15 points in the final 20 minutes of play as CSUSB shot 63.6 percent from the floor (14 of 22) in the final two quarters against the Wildcats. She led three others in double figures —
Casie Johnson and
Norissa Sanders each scored 14 points and
Ashley Carson added 10 — for CSUSB, now 2-1 overall.
Trailing 23-22 at halftime, coach
Susan Crebbin's squad outscored the Wildcats 9-0 off turnovers and secured the lead for good on
Casie Johnson's layup that put CSUSB up 29-27 with 7:57 remaining in the quarter.
Coleman converted a three-point play early in the final quarter and
Natalie Avadis gave the Coyotes' their first 10-point lead on a free throw that put her team up 46-36 with 8:11 to go in the game.
Casie Johnson gave CSUSB its largest lead of the game on a pair of free throws with 1:09 left and CSUSB up 62-47.
Avadis and
Leelee Owens each scored five points,
Mya Johnson added two and
Summer Ramsey one.
Casie Johnson led CSUSB in rebounds (seven) and Carson, Ramsey and Sanders each had five. Ramsey led in assists with four.
Taylor Baird led CWU with game-highs of 19 points and 16 rebounds.
The Coyotes conclude play in Washington when they play Northwest Nazarene on Saturday afternoon.
