Box Score STOCKTON (March 5, 2015) -- Lost opportunities cost the Coyotes in their season-ending 92-87 overtime loss to Humboldt State in a CCAA Tournament quarterfinal game Thursday night at the Stockton Arena.
Sixth-seeded CSUSB fought back in the second half, grabbed the lead, but missed free throws inside the final minute of regulation dearly cost the Coyotes their shot at reaching the semifinal round.
Leading by five, 74-69, with 54 seconds remaining, the Coyotes missed three front ends on one-and-one situations at the line in a 26-second span and the Lumberjacks made the Coyotes pay with five points of their own down the stretch to force overtime.
Senior
Isaiah Morton, who scored a game-high 23 points, gave the Coyotes their five-point lead with a three-point play and the upset seemed promising.
HSU's Malik Morgan answered with a layup, but on the Coyotes' next possession, CCAA Newcomer of the Year
Jacob Thomas was fouled with 41 seconds left.
He missed the front end and the Jacks went right down the court and cut the Coyotes' lead to 74-73 with a layup fRom Allan Guei.
Gilbert Parga was fouled immediately afterward, and he, too, missed the front end. The Jacks got the rebound, but Thomas forced a steal, and was fouled with 15 seconds to go.
But Thomas was off the mark on his free throw and HSU came down the court. Guei was fouled by
Taylor Statham. He made the first, missed the second and HSU got the offensive board with eight seconds to go.
The Lumberjacks had two shots for the game winner, but came up shy on missed layups by Rakim Brown and Guei before the horn sounded.
In overtime, HSU grabbed the lead early, went up by seven and stayed in control for the win.
For Coyotes coach
Jeff Oliver, it marked the first time that a team of his finished below .500 at 12-14.
"That sequence in the final minute kind of sums up the season,'' he said. "We had some highs, and had some lows, and unfortunately, we came up short. Our effort was there tonight, but to have the season end, especially when we held the advantage, is a tough one to take.''
CSUSB shot 55.9 percent from the field, thanks to a 60-percent effort in the second half. Morton scored 18 of his points in the second half with dribble penetration that HSU could not answer.
"We were aggressive and they couldn't answer,'' Oliver said. "Isaiah pushed the tempo and that allowed us to take command until late.''
Five Coyotes scored in double figures, led by Morton. Thomas had 13, Parga and
Taylor Statham with 12 and
Tevin Harris 11.
Guei led HSU (22-7) with 21. The Lumberjacks take on second-seed Cal Poly Pomona at 8:05 p.m. Friday night.
