TURLOCK -- Winning on the road in the CCAA is not an easy proposition. Even with a double-digit lead with less than three minutes remaining.
A large Coyotes' lead throughout most of the second half held up as No. 12-ranked Cal State San Bernardino withstood a late Cal State Stanislaus rally in its 77-75 victory Saturday night.
Senior guard Lacy Haddock paced the Coyotes with 17 points in 40 minutes of work as the Coyotes regained the top spot in the CCAA at 17-2 overall and 14-1 in league play. Fellow senior Kirby Gardner reached double figures for the ninth straight game with 14 and Andrew Young followed with 11.
CSUSB shot 56.3 percent from the field including 15-of-24 in the second half and led by double figures for most of the second half.
Haddock gave the Coyotes 72-62 lead with 2:43 remaining on a pair of free throws and the outcome seemed well in hand. After all, CSUSB entered play having won its 27 games when leading with five minutes remaining.
But the Warriors (13-6, 9-6) did not get the memo on that anecdote as they whittled the Coyotes lead to 75-72 on a Chris Read layup with 22 seconds left.
Read had a chance to cut the lead to two on the and-one play, but he missed the free throw.
CSUSB got the ball inbounds and Taylor Statham was immediately fouled. He missed the first of a two-shot foul, but made the second to extend CSUSB's lead back to four -- 76-72.
On the next possession, CSUS's Alek Carlson buried a 3-pointer that cut CSUSB's lead to one with 11 seconds left.
Marcus Bell led the Warriors with 21 points and 15 rebounds and Read had 19.
The Warriors were undone by their inability to hit free throws for the game. They finished 14-of-27, good for 51.9 percent -- the poorest effort by a CSUSB opponent on the year.
The Coyotes complete the road trip at Chico State on Saturday night.
After a CSUS timeout, the Coyotes' Jordan Burris inbounded the ball to Haddock, who was fouled eight seconds remaining.
He hit the first, but missed the second and the Warriors had a chance to tie. The CCAA's leading 3-pointer shooter Clinton Tremelling fired a 3 with five seconds left, but the shot didn't go in and the buzzer sounded before Marcus Bell's putback.
