No. 7 Coyotes fall apart against No. 23 Cal Poly Pomona

Coyotes lose 88-68 win before record-setting crowd

Kirby Gardner led the Coyotes with 17 points.
Box Score SAN BERNARDINO – Saturday night's matchup between two top-25 teams had all the makings of a memorable night.

The game between No. 7 Cal State San Bernardino and No. 23 Cal Poly Pomona marked the first time in the 51-game series history that both teams were ranked.

The game was played before a record-setting crowd of 4,589 on Pack the Gym Night.

But the end result is what matters the most and when the horn sounded for the final time, the Coyotes were dealt a stunning 88-68 loss on a night that CPP could not miss and CSUSB struggled on both ends of the court.

The loss snapped the Coyotes' 16-game winning streak as they fell to 16-2 overall and 13-1 in the CCAA.

The visiting Broncos were nearly unstoppable in the first half, shooting 60.6 percent from the field and built a 46-24 lead – the largest halftime deficit the Coyotes have ever faced in the 19-year history of Coussoulis Arena.

The Coyotes trailed by as many as 32 points with 11:53 to go.

Senior G Kirby Gardner led the Coyotes with 17 points and Jordan Burris 12. CSUSB finished with a season-worst 36.1 percent field goal effort.

The one-two punch from Jordan Faison (26 points) and DeRonn Scott (19) was where the damage took place. Scott had 11 assists and the duo combined to shoot 20-of-27.

CSUSB returns to the road next week at Cal State Stanislaus (Friday) and Chico State (Saturday).
