SEASIDE -- A victory did not look promising for No. 17 Cal State San Bernardino after it found itself down by 10 points at halfitme in Saturday night's game against Cal State Monterey Bay,
The last time one of Jeff Oliver's teams trailed by double digits at the break and won was a year ago when the Coyotes came back from an 18-point deficit against CSUMB in San Bernardino and won in overtime.
And this time, the venue may have changed, but the end result was oh-so-sweet.
CSUSB shot a sizzling 70 percent from the field in the second half and relied upon senior guard Lacy Haddock's layin with a second and a half remaining for a 79-77 conquest over the Otters.
The victory keeps the Coyotes tied for the top spot in the CCAA with Cal Poly Pomona at 16-2 with four games remaining in the regular season.
Senior Andrew Young paced the Coyotes for the second straight game with a game-high 21 points and Haddock with 17. Both players were 8-of-12 from the floor -- Young added five free throws and Haddock with a 3-pointer.
For the Coyotes, it was a tale of two halves. CSUMB outscored the Coyotes 21-3 from 3-point land and used two long-distance shots during a 19-8 run that closed the half.
CSUSB found itself trailing by 11 points early in the second half before it found momentum with contributions from four different players including a 3-pointer from seldom-used Larry Thompkins II.
Haddock made the ensuing 15-4 run complete with a layup with 15:54 left and the scored tied at 46-all.
Over the next 15 minutes the game remained a two-possession game as exemplified with seven ties in the final half.
Young pushed the Coyotes out front 75-70 with a layup with 2:18 left. But the Otters crept back and tied the game on a pair of free throws from Evan Zeller with 28 seconds left.
The Coyotes held possession of the ball and called timeout with 19 seconds left. They worked the ball around and Haddock drove inside and scored the eventual game-winning layup with time running out.
Both teams called timeout to set up the final play, but time ran out and the Coyotes had their win.
The victory marked just the fourth time in 20 games during the Oliver era that one of his teams came back to win after trailing by at least 10 points at the break.
Senior Joshua Gouch, senior Jordan Burris and junior Taylor Statham each had nine and Juan Martinez had seven for the Coyotes, now 19-3 overall.
CSUSB returns to Coussoulis Arena on Friday when it takes on Sonoma State.
