Burris comes alive in No. 7 CSUSB's 82-70 win over HSU

Senior scores career-high 29 points on 5-of-5 3-point effort

Senior Jordan Burris had a monster game with a team season-high 29 points.
Box Score | SAN BERNARDINO Jordan Burris provided the guidance for No. 7 Cal State San Bernardino on Friday night, scoring a personal best and team season-high 29 points on a nearly flawless shooting effort in an 82-70 victory over Humboldt State in CCAA play.

Burris was perfect on his first eight shots and finished 8-of-10 from the field, a perfect 5-of-5 from 3-point land and hit on all eight free throw attempts for the Coyotes, now 16-1 overall and 13-0 in the CCAA.

The victory extended CSUSB's winning streak to 16 consecutive games and sets up Saturday night's tilt against No. 23 Cal Poly Pomona, which has won 12 straight.

Tipoff is 7:35 p.m. at Coussouils Arena.

The game was played at a physical pace with a total of 45 foul calls with HSU picking up 28. Three technical fouls were called – all on CSUSB – with head coach Jeff Oliver picking up his second with 11:28 remaining in the game.

The Coyotes' big four – Burris, Andrew Young, Kirby Gardner and Lacy Haddock – all played pivotal roles in turning back the Lumberjacks, now 8-11, 3-10.

After Burris' heroic night, Young had 15 points and seven rebounds, Gardner scored 15 with seven rebounds and Haddock dealt 12 assists and just missed out on a double-double with nine points.

All told, CSUSB shot 54.2 percent from the floor on 26-of-48 shooting and deft passing concluded with 22 assists.

The Coyotes got off to a quick start, owning a 17-6 lead after a Young free throw with 14:19 remaining in the first half.

HSU, though, answered right back with a 12-0 run over the next three-plus minutes and pulled ahead 18-17 on an Allan Guei layup.

But CSUSB gained precious momentum in the final 1:47 of the half, outscoring HSU 8-0, keyed by junior reserve Taylor Statham's pair of jumpers with less than minute to go.

The Coyotes, who led by as many as 11 points in the early going of the second half, found themselves down by three with 11:29 to go after Oliver picked up his second technical.

The game remained within one possession until Joshua Gouch came through with a big three-point play with 8:01 left.

Leading 65-64, Gouch scored on a jumper and was fouled. He hit the free throw to give the Coyotes' a four-point cushion and went on to outscore HSU 14-6 down the stretch.

Burris, whose streak of double-digit scoring games ended last week at 10, was 6-of-6 from the floor in the first half with four 3-pointers. That effort helped CSUSB to a 61.5 percent field goal percentage in the half.

Haddock helped out with eight first-half assists and Gardner had 11 points.

HSU was led by David Howard's 20 points.
