Box Score ARCATA (Nov. 22, 2014) -- Senior Isaiah Morton was the catalyst for the Coyotes on Saturday, scoring a game-high 32 points with five 3-pointers in CSUSB's 77-70 win at Humboldt State in the CCAA opener for both teams.
The Brooklyn, N.Y., native and Marist transfer finished 10-of-19 from the field, and defensively stood out with five steals as the Coyotes (1-1, 1-0 CCAA) fired 61.9 percent from the field in the second half for a hard-fought win.
His 32 points are the most by a Coyote since Brandon Brown's 34 scored against Cal State Monterey Bay in the 2009 CCAA Tournament title game.
Senior G Taylor Statham also was solid with 14 points, and team highs in rebounds (eight) and assists (three) in 33 minutes of work.
"I couldn't be more prouder of our effort tonight,'' Coyotes coach Jeff Oliver said. "This is a difficult place to play, and we found another gear in the second half. Isaiah was something. He got hot and the rest followed, especially from the line. A great win all the way around.''
Morton scored 26 second-half points, hitting 8-of-10 FGs, with four threes.
Two substantial runs keyed the Coyotes attack with both in the second half. HSU led 43-38 with 16:53 remaining when Morton scored 11 points in less than five minutes that triggered a 15-3 run and CSUSB up 53-46 with 10:22 left. Then leading 60-59 with 5:02 left, CSUSB outscored its foe 14-5 down the stretch with the Coyotes hitting 12-of-13 from the line.
Gilbert Parga (6-of-6 FTs) and Casey Oldemoppen each scored eight points and Everett Turner followed with six.
Allan Guei led HSU (2-1, 0-1) with 15 points. HSU finished the night 13-of-33 from the floor with 23 turnovers.
The two teams complete their season series Saturday night at CSUSB.
